The David Exhibition

The David Exhibition

2005. Curated by Liza Essers

"Much is made of an incident that happened in biblical times - the encounter between David and Goliath. What took only a moment has resonated through time, across cultures and continues to do so. Yet, what of all the numerous incidents that occur throughout time that impact silently? Those that happen in a desert or city, and are not relayed, or confirmed by historical record. No witnesses communicate the ideologies around the actions, no one expands upon their context. And while one cannot measure the impact of an action, conversation or thought, they ripple through consciousness, creating our evolution."

Kim Lieberman obtained a master's degree in Fine Art from the University of the Witwatersrand in 2001. She began making postal art in 1996 and has explored a wide range of different works using varying elements of postage. These include posting, envelopes, stamps, blank stamp sheets and what she calls 'perforation residue' - the confetti left over when the perforations are punched. Through exploring other mediums such as silk thread, oil paint, figures and intertwined lines. Lieberman extends the conceptual consideration of these postal elements in her work.

This work includes silhouettes of people that are recognisable and those that aren't - people whose actions are noted constantly and those whose actions are noted beyond the ordinary. It is not to say that these silent actions contain any less power than those publicly acknowledged.

Kim Lieberman exhibited a solo show at Esso Gallery in New York in 2004. Other solo exhibitions include: Every Interaction Interrupts the Future in 2003 at the Goodman Gallery, Johannesburg and Blood Relatives at Camouflage Art, Culture, Politics, Johannesburg, 2000.

Lieberman has participated in the following group exhibitions: Alighiero Boetti Shamaan/Showman (Literary event and exhibition) at Esso Gallery in New York in 2005, The Ampersand Foundation 1997 - 2003 at Warren Siebrits Gallery in Johannesburg, 2003. After the Diagram at the White Box Gallery New York in 2001, switch on/off Oudtshoorn Arts Festival, curated by Marcus Neustetter in 2001 and Translation/Seduction/Displacement at the White Box Gallery, New York in 2000.
