Postal Art

Postal Art

Elle Decor, 2001. Tanya Kovarsky

Made from silk thread that has been woven and stitched through perforated blank postage stamp paper, Kim Lieberman's "postal art", which was recently exhibited at Camouflage gallery and is to be an exhibition in New York from April, records the situation they were sewn in.

"The locations in which I sewed the works are both random locales and integral to the work, the threading happens where I am, where I go, where I interact," explains Kim.

Having studied graphic design and Fine Art, Kim started her first postal work in 1996 using poste restante letters, the inspiration coming from her extensive travels. Poste restante is a system enabling travellers to collect letters from wherever they may be and if not fetched, the post is returned to sender.

Since then, Kim's art has been exhibited throughout the country; she has won several awards and received the Ampersand Foundation Fellowship which took her to New York in 1999. There, just after having sewn a button back on her jacket, Kim put the reel of thread on a piece of blank postage stamp paper she had been planning to make a collage with, and had the idea to start weaving through the perforations. Thus began a highly creative and original art medium.

Kim also weaves discreet numbers, which have meaning into her art. "I establish this meaning through Gematria, a numeric system that is a component of the Kabbala (Jewish mystical tradition). From this system I draw on specific numbers that have weight and meaning in a kabbalistic context and in a personal context,"
